Olga Chernysheva

Olga Chernysheva (Russia, 1962) is one of her country’s best-known contemporary artists. Her films, photographs and drawings with empathy and subtlety depict the everyday realities of a homeland – and a hometown, Moscow – without avoiding issues of injustice and vulnerability, however, neither giving away to denigration. Chernysheva visually depicts societal processes and individual destinies, more important to acknowledge rather than mourn them. This type of portrayal of the contemporary can be seen as part of an old Russian tradition.
