Kohta invites you to an outdoor concert by echo+seashell and Torus at Teurastamo on Wednesday, August 12 at 8pm.
I had in mind the design
The arms that are familiar to my shoulders
I have not seen you, lady, She-bear
Bendingoverwise Victoria, I’m beaten
Possessed a thousand times
– ‘When a Girl Wants’, echo+seashell featuring Torus
echo+seashell are Henna Hyvärinen (Finland) and Susan Kooi (the Netherlands). Their collaboration consists of live music performances, videos and exhibitions. The music may be produced in collaboration with different musicians, while the lyrics form the core, the ‘baby soul’ of the duo, which also experiments with costumes, props, sets and dancers, depending on the location.
echo+seashell have performed at Paradiso, de Appel Arts Centre, de Ateliers, OT301 and for Girls Like Us at Butchers Tears in Amsterdam; 1646 and Billytown in the Hague; showroom MAMA and Worm in Rotterdam; Flutgraben in Berlin; Sorbus and Kiasma in Helsinki; UP STATE in Zurich; the Others in Turin; the Antagon Festival and Tehdas Theater in Turku; Fokidos in Athens; the Legion in Calgary; the Banff Centre in Banff; Selectors in Vancouver and elsewhere.
In 2016 Perro Verlag (Vancouver) published Nature, a collection of echo+seashell song texts in a printed format. Their music videos have been screened and exhibited in Galeria Municipal do Porto in Portugal, Fokidos in Athens, Such Gallery and HIAP in Helsinki, Titanik in Turku and elsewhere.
Torus is an alias of Joeri Woudstra, a multidisciplinary artist based in The Hague. Since debuting in 2012, the RMBA Tokyo graduate has taken on varied roles such as soundtracking for Metahaven’s Benjamin Bratton stream and an installation for documenta 14 co-produced with Malibu, on echoes of pop culture. His A/V project ‘Descend In Chains’ is an 11.11 video of deconstructed choir music exhibited in gallery and club contexts such as De School, ‘t Kunstfort an Unfair. He recently re-scored Tarkovsky’s Stalker, performing live in the Eye Film Museum Amsterdam. This year he released the Flash, an EP in collaboration with DJ Lostboi.
Recently echo+seashell collaborated with Torus on making music together, for which they worked at the Red Bull Music Studio in Amsterdam, mixing Torus’ ambient music with echo+seashells vocals, and recording live music instruments. The concert at Kunsthalle Kohta is the first time the trio is performing live together, premiering three new songs.
