Art Criticism in Changing Media Landscape

Wednesday, 22 January 2020, 5–7pm

Kunsthalle Kohta’s well-received series of panel discussions on the state of art criticism will continue on 22 January. This time we discuss the opportunities and challenges for criticism in a continuously changing media landscape.

How has the role and status of criticism progressed in the culture sections of established Finnish media houses in the past decade? Art criticism has meanwhile gained more visibility with the birth of new art blogs and web journals. Perhaps also reaching new audiences? How has criticism itself changed as its technical tools have developed? Are there new demands for criticism in the era of digitalisation?

The current exhibition at Kohta by Belgian artist Lili Dujourie will also be commented.

The participants in the discussion are Anu Ubaud, editor-in-chief of Helsingin Sanomat, and Fredrik Sonck, head of culture at Hufvudstadsbladet, together with Sanna Lipponen and Viivi Poutiainen, founders of the online art journal EDIT-media.

The discussion, bilingual in Finnish and Swedish, will be moderated by journalist and media professional Paula Salovaara.
